The California Parole Board is fucked. Once again, they've denied parole to the one member of the Manson "family" who really deserves it: Leslie Van Houten. Come on, people, she was NINETEEN years old, and brainwashed by an evil genius. You would think that former prosecutor Steven Kay could find something better to do with his time than work to keep her in prison.... It was also quite annoying to hear CNN's reporter repeating over and over that the LaBianca house was "targeted at random" by the murderous familyites -- in fact, it was next door to the home of Harold True, a house that Charlie and the gang had visited numerous times.
Anyhoo... FYI, the classic book on the Manson saga, Ed Sanders' The Family, is being rereleased in July. And there's now a children's book on the Manson trial... I don't think I'll be putting that one on the wish list for Santa! (Maybe that wish list for SATAN... )
From time to time, I've contemplated what I'd like to shove up a certain President's ass, but tomorrow, some poor Doctor gets to cram a colonoscope into one of ol' Dubya's openings which usually spews sh*t. (No, not his mouth).
As an anaesthetized Georgie undergoes the alien rectal probe, for a brief period of time Mr Invisible #2, Dick "Heartbeat Away" Cheney will assume the powers of the Presidency. Not unlike his boss assumed them despite an election a couple of years ago.
Last night was AGLIFF's "My Gay Movie" night. Way cool. Thanks to a nudge here from David, and a timely call from Mark with tickets, I ventured down South past the "Oh My God! What-In-Hell Are They Doing?" Dresden-like intersection of Ben White and I-35 to the snazzy Metropolitan theater for this event. It was sold out, in a much larger theater than last year, and a full slate of films were shown to an appreciative audience.
Among the highlights for me was the "G.Y.M. Project" (Gay Youth Movie) which featured infectiously enthusastic and cuddly cute gay & lesbian youths working on their film project, showing us a behind-the-scenes look at the process that was almost as much fun as their film, "Fade To Pink." Another gem was "Sexy Boy," based on a true story of lust for hunky guys at the gym, with a surprisingly witty twist. eye candy to be sure, but smart eye candy. One aptly named film, "Oddly Happy" chose an interview format to present snippets of insight on the gay experience, tolerance, religion and more, and included an onscreen performance by the renowned Mark Shoemaker, star at the very fun and funny National Comedy Theatre of Austin and also seen here on our own Bellyfuzz!
.. I still never quite understand their sense of humor. Making the IM rounds this week has been a take on Price Waterhouse Coopers' name change to Monday. I don't understand PWC, much less this website poking fun at it. [the volume is a bit loud on it, but work safe]. In this same genre of things that must be funny to someone that drives on the left hand side of the road is 'Dog in a coat'.
MGM this week! I volunteer for aGLIFF, and they've got a pretty big event this week: the 2nd My Gay Movie. Its Thursday 6/27 at 7:30pm at the Metropolitan Theater (IH-35 and Stassney) and tickets can be bought online. I'm pushing this on the blog because I know we've got a couple of budding filmmakers in our midst. Baze & 4A - you guys ought to be there, so that Friday you can write in saying "I can make a better movie than that!" and that we can hold you to it! You've got the Macs, the cameras.. how can we help you find your muse?
You know, Pay It Forward, with Haley Joel Osment, Helen Hunt and Kevin Spacey is a better film than I gave it credit for. Oh, it's not great, by no means perfect, and sometimes derails into screenplay "sidings" of predictability and telegraphed romance, but it's worth a rental. The kid (from 6th Sense) is a fairly remarkable actor for 12, and handles this difficult role well. Hunt reprises some of her role as anguished Mom in "As Good As It Gets" but shines, as usual, and Spacey also handles the sometimes mawkishly sentimental script with a deft performance. If not for the last 7 or 8 minutes, I'd give it 4 stars instead of 3, but it IS worth seeing.
"Haley Joel Osment's mom keeps a bottle of vodka in the chandelier. You would too with a demonic, passive-aggressive, New Age munchkin trying to run your life."
Am I the only one who thinks this headline is kind of sick?
Darryl Kile, a St. Louis Cardinal pitcher, died suddenly over the weekend, apparently from arterial blockage. The autopsy found that his heart was enlarge almost 50% larger than it should have been, and here is today's headline on cnnsi.com:
