Steve, given the (apparently mistaken) chick flick rep that Billy Elliot has, I doubt very much that you were the last man in America to see it. (Empirical evidence also suggests otherwise as I haven't seen it yet (heh)).
On the subject of dark films, I saw Donnie Darko last night. It was really well done, and wickedly, erm, dark. Something of a cross between Catcher in the Rye, American Beauty, and the X Files. A diverse cast (especially for an Indie) led by Jake Gyllenhaal (who starred in Bubble Boy (of all things)) in the title role. His character reminded me of Ricky Fitts (played by Wes Bentley) in American Beauty. The cast also includes Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Patrick Swayze, and Katharine Ross. A bunch of reviews are collected here (but be warned, many of them contain spoilers).
World's Latest Film Reviews Am I the last man in America to see Billy Elliot? I can't believe it's taken me so long to sit down and watch this gem of a movie. A good, if somewhat cynical and superficial thumbnail: If Charles Dickens had written "Flashdance" after watching "The Full Monty" and "Ma Vie En Rose."
See it, and dance like no one's watching. (Then go ahead and rent "The Mexican" and be prepared to laugh at the dark comedy with Brad Pitt, Julie Roberts and a priceless James "Sopranos" Gandolfini in a wonderfully amusing supporting role.).
